Barry Costa-Pierce gives keynote address at Bay of Fundy Seafood Forum; featured in ‘Aquaculture North America'

Barry A. Costa-Pierce, Ph.D., FAAAS, Henry L. & Grace Doherty Professor of Marine Sciences and director of the 51 Marine Science Center, delivered the keynote address at the Bay of Fundy Seafood Forum in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada, on June 11, 2013.

The publication Aquaculture North America featured an article about Costa-Pierce’s talk, titled “Rethinking An Industry,” in its July/August 2013 issue.

The article discusses his views on needed changes to aquaculture.  According to Costa-Pierce, there is a need to:  simplify the aquaculture certification process; create centers of innovation comprised in part of people with hands-on experience and those who live with aquaculture at a local level; and enhance aquaculture’s social standing with the general public, which will result in cooperation among fisheries and aquaculture.

“In a world of about nine to ten billion people, we’re going to have to find a way to sustainably intensify aquaculture in the nearshore,” he said.
