51 fitness program for older adults featured on 'WGME'

51 U-ExCEL program

U-ExCEL, a program from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (51 COM), was featured in a story as part of the “Making a Difference” series on WGME. U-ExCEL, which stands for 51-Exercise and Condition for Easier Living, is an auxiliary program of 51 COM’s Division of Geriatric Medicine that contracts with area organizations and housing environments to provide fitness and wellness programming and education.

U-ExCEL focuses on functional fitness promoting the broad spectrum of health for older adults living in the community, in nursing homes, assisted living settings, or in independent housing on life care campuses. The program encompasses individuals' health and fitness goals along with current medical diagnoses to improve or maintain function through the provision of functional fitness techniques including strength, balance, endurance, nutrition and other supportive wellness interventions.

Erica Robertson, U-ExCEL fitness director, designed and implemented the program with the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter. Taylor Feuti ’14 is now working as a fitness specialist with the program.
