Barry Costa-Pierce leads lecture series at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden

Professor Barry A. Costa-Pierce, Ph.D., chair of the University of New England Department of Marine Sciences and director of the 51 Center for Excellence in Marine Sciences, led a series of lectures in a one-week intensive Ph.D. course at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

The course, titled, “Transdisciplinary approaches to sustainable marine aquaculture,” attracted 23 students from 10 countries. It was organized around the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 14 on oceans and the European Union’s Strategies for Blue Growth. Costa-Pierce gave talks on the Food and Agriculture Organization of the U.N.’s ecosystems approach to aquaculture, aquaculture spatial planning, carrying capacity, social-ecological systems, sea vegetables, and tilapia aquaculture.
