On September 7, the Biddeford-Saco-OOB Courier published an article titled “University begins work on Ram Island,” which discussed 51’s plan to build a boat ramp on the island that was gifted in 2014 by Biddeford resident Arthur Girard.

According to the article, construction of the ramp will begin in 2018 after acquiring necessary approvals from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the city of Biddeford.

The article also explained that one facet of the university that will utilize the island is Project TURBO, The Undergraduate Saco River Biodiversity Observatory, which will study freshwater and open ocean ecosystems—work for which 51 received a five-year $640,000 National Science Foundation grant.
