FAQ

General Eligibility

Is the PBPH Certificate Program considered non-degree?

Yes. The PBPH program is a non-degree certificate program offering undergraduate-level courses. Under limited circumstances, students may be eligible for federal financial aid for preparatory coursework required for admission into an eligible graduate or professional healthcare program.

What are the basic eligibility requirements for federal aid as a PBPH student?

You must meet all the following criteria:

  • Not currently enrolled in any other degree or aid-eligible program at any school (including 51°µÍø).
  • Not already admitted to your intended graduate or professional program.
  • Enrolled in preparatory coursework required for admission to an eligible graduate/professional program in healthcare or medicine. Courses that are recommended but not required are not aid eligible.
  • Enrolled in at least 6 qualifying credits per semester.
  • Within a single, continuous 12-month window of aid eligibility for federal aid for preparatory coursework.
Can I receive aid for courses I’ve already taken?

Yes, in limited cases. You may receive aid may be offered for one repeat of a previously passed course (grade of D or higher for financial aid purposes).

I’ve already received federal loans as a non-degree student before. Am I still eligible?

Probably not. Students can only receive federal aid for preparatory coursework once in their lifetime and only for a single consecutive 12-month period, at any school. If you have used this before, even partially, you are not eligible again.

Can I receive aid for preparatory coursework if I’m already enrolled in another eligible program?

No. Federal aid for preparatory coursework is only available to students who are not currently enrolled in another eligible program, including 51°µÍø programs. If you are receiving federal aid for your current program, you cannot receive additional federal aid for preparatory courses at the same time.

Do I need to meet academic requirements?

Probably. All students receiving federal aid must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards based on prior academic history with federal aid. Students not meeting SAP may need to appeal before receiving aid.

Requesting Aid

How do I request financial aid as a PBPH student?

Complete both of the following:

  1. The PBPH Financial Aid Request Form
  2. The FAFSA at studentaid.gov, including 51°µÍø’s school code: 002050.

Your request will be reviewed by the College of Professional Studies (CPS) and then by Student Financial Services (SFS) for final eligibility determination.

What happens once I submit my form?

Upon submission of the form:

  • CPS reviews your transcript(s) and works with you to confirm which courses are required for your intended program.
  • Your request form and required coursework are forwarded to SFS for review.
  • SFS determines your eligibility and notifies you of your loan offer.
How long will it take to process my Financial Aid Request Form?

Allow 1–2 weeks for processing and determination of your eligibility. Students are encouraged to submit their requests as far in advance as possible before their courses begin.

Aid Amounts and Loan Limits

How much federal aid am I eligible to receive?

Offered amounts will vary based on the student’s specific circumstances, including course enrollment and prior federal loan history. Federal loan limits for preparatory coursework:

  • Dependent Students: Up to $5,500 total
  • Independent students: Up to $12,500 (no more than $5,500 subsidized)
Can I receive more than one year of federal loans for preparatory coursework?

No. Students are only eligible for one 12-month period of aid for preparatory coursework*. However, if your 12-month window spans two academic years, you may receive two annual loan limits within that timeframe.

*Preparatory coursework is defined as any prerequisite that must be completed for a specific academic program before being admitted into that academic program at the postsecondary level.

Can my parents apply for a Parent PLUS Loan?

Yes, for dependent students only. Graduate PLUS loans are not available since PBPH is a non-degree undergraduate-level program.

Am I eligible for any other funding?

PBPH students eligible for federal financial aid may receive aid to cover direct costs (tuition, required fees) and books and supplies.
